"Oh No Not My Babe" is a vocal written by Gerry Goffin and Carole Rex.[1] The song'due south lyrics describe how friends and family repeatedly warn the singer about a partner's infidelities. The song is regarded as an American standard due to its long-time popularity with both music listeners and recording artists.

The first released version of "Oh No Not My Baby" was by Maxine Brown, according to whom the song had first been recorded past her Scepter Records' roster-mates the Shirelles with the grouping'due south members alternating leads, an approach which had rendered the vocal unreleasable.

Brownish says that Scepter exec Stan Greenberg gave her the song with the advisement that she had to "observe the original tune" from the recording by the Shirelles: "they [had gone] then far off by each [grouping member] taking their own lead, no one knew any more where the existent melody stood."

Chocolate-brown recalls sitting on the porch of her i-level house in Queens listening to the Shirelles' track play through her open window. A grouping of children skipping rope on the sidewalk picked up the song'south principal hook earlier Brown, hearing the children singing "Oh no not my baby" every bit they skipped, gave Brown the thought for the vocal's melody. Brown recorded her song over the Shirelles' runway with the grouping'due south vocals erased; Dee Dee Warwick provided the harmony song on the chorus.[2]

Rod Stewart version [edit]

In 1973 Rod Stewart (backed by his Faces bandmates Ron Wood, Kenny Jones and Ian McLagan) charted with "Oh No Not My Infant"; his self-produced version — a unmarried with no parent album — reached #6 UK in September 1973 afterwards reaching #59 on both the U.Due south.[4], and Canadian charts before the year'due south end. The B-side, credited on the unmarried to Faces, was "Jodie" written past Ron Wood, Rod Stewart and Ian McLagan.

In December 1992 Cher released "Oh No Not My Baby" as the follow-up to her international hit "The Shoop Shoop Song (It's in His Kiss)" and likewise produced by Peter Asher; the track became a moderate international hit early in 1993. AllMusic editor J. F. Promis called her comprehend "gutsy."[5]

  • The song was covered by Manfred Mann — whose version of the Shirelles' "Sha La La" had shared the U.Due south. Top forty with Brown's "Oh No Not My Infant" — and that group's version of "Oh No Not My Infant", released 9 Apr 1965, reached #11 in the UK.[16] Not released every bit a single in the U.Due south., Manfred Mann's "Oh No Non My Infant" failed to chart in a Canadian release and charted depression in Australia at #67.[ citation needed ]
  • Dusty Springfield recorded it for her second album Ev'rything's Coming Up Dusty in 1965
